Michigan remains a top target for the DLCC in 2024
WASHINGTON — Today, a judicial panel in Michigan approved new state House maps, following a December decision that struck down both House and Senate maps in the Detroit metro area. The new House maps make changes to 15 districts and will now be in effect for the pivotal 2024 legislative elections, while new Senate maps are still pending ahead of the 2026 election.
While the Senate is not on the ballot this year, defending our majority in the Michigan House this November is critical to maintain our Democratic trifecta – and these new maps represent an important opportunity for Democrats. Prior to November’s election, the DLCC will also be all hands on deck for two majority-deciding House special elections scheduled for April 16th.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“The DLCC is committed to protecting every Michigander’s right to vote, and these maps deliver opportunities for different communities to engage in our democracy. Defending the Democratic majority in the Michigan House continues to be a top priority for the DLCC – we must protect the important work the Democratic trifecta has delivered, from passing common sense gun laws to expanding Medicaid access.
“The DLCC has a strong path to maintain Democratic power in 2024, and we look forward to working with our in-state partners to identify the best opportunities to maintain our House majority with these new maps officially in place. The DLCC is already hard at work delivering resources and building sustainable infrastructure to protect our Democratic majority – including in April’s special elections, through November, and for years to come. Michigan will continue to be a shining example of the important work Democrats accomplish in state legislatures and holding the House is one of our top priorities for November.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures and building state infrastructure. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
