Protecting and expanding the Democratic majority in the Virginia House of Delegates is a top priority for the DLCC in 2025
WASHINGTON— Today, the DLCC announced an additional $400K investment in the Virginia House Democratic Caucus, part of an ongoing seven-figure investment to protect and expand Democrats’ House majority. The DLCC is also announcing an additional four target Spotlight races.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“State legislative Democrats in Virginia have hit the ground running, and the DLCC is continuing to invest in the must-win races that will decide control of the House of Delegates. We’re backing hardworking and authentic candidates in the toughest battlegrounds who are out in their communities every day, talking to voters about how they’ll fight the chaos in Washington and put working families’ opportunities first. This investment will fuel them as they continue working on the ground to protect and expand Democrats’ razor-thin majority this fall.”
The DLCC added the following candidates to its slate of Spotlight candidates in Virginia:
- May Nivar (HD-57) is a business leader and daughter of immigrants running for the Virginia House this November to flip her district blue. May was raised in low-income housing and helped out in her parents’ small takeout restaurant to make ends meet before putting herself through college. Today, May leads initiatives that impact thousands of employees and is a tireless advocate for women, Asian Americans, and other underrepresented communities. May is ready to win another House seat for Democrats and get to work building an economy that uplifts working families, winning funding for public schools, and expanding access to quality health care.
- Leslie Mehta (HD-73) is an attorney running for the Virginia House this November to flip her district blue. Leslie has always been a tireless champion for justice and fair treatment for every citizen. After losing her daughter to a tragic illness in 2021, Leslie became an outspoken advocate for expanded access to affordable health care. If Leslie is elected to the Virginia House this November, she will be a strong champion for the people on issues like strengthening the economy, investing in public education, and expanding access to affordable health care.
- Lindsey Dougherty (HD-75) is a Senior Research Administrator at Virginia Commonwealth University, running to flip a seat in the Virginia House this November. This year, Lindsey has seen firsthand how Trump and Republicans’ extremist DOGE cuts have decimated critical research initiatives and jobs her community depends on. Like many of Virginia’s working families, Lindsey has fought through financial uncertainty and serious medical issues to give her family the life they deserve. If she is elected this fall, she will continue that fight to ensure every member of her district has a powerful voice in Richmond.
- Kacey Carnegie (HD-89) is an attorney from Deep Creek running to flip a seat in the Virginia House this November. Kacey is incredibly grateful to the community where she built her life and raised her family, and now she’s ready to do her part to give back through public service. If elected, Kacey will be committed to uplifting every Virginian as she fights to improve public safety, lower the cost of living for working families, and ensure Virginia invests in strong public education.
