WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced Debra Shigley as a Spotlight candidate ahead of her special election to the Georgia Senate on August 26th.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“Georgians are fed up with state Republicans standing by while Donald Trump and his allies in Washington advance a dangerous budget bill that strips working families of health care and opportunities to thrive. Debra Shigley is a small business owner and mother who is deeply embedded in her community and has what it takes to stand up against GOP extremism for hardworking Georgians. Like so many state leaders on the ground, Debra is knocking on doors in her community and providing the leadership voters crave. The DLCC is proud to stand with her.”
Debra Shigley (SD-21) is a small business owner, former employment attorney, and mom of five running for the Georgia Senate in an August special election to flip her district blue. Debra’s career has taken her in many directions, but now she finds herself drawn to public service by a desire to make her district a safer, more affordable place to raise a family. Debra is ready to get to work in Atlanta to help ensure a bright future for every child in Georgia. If Debra is elected, she will fight for stronger public school funding, expanded access to affordable health care, and a lower cost of living for working families.
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
