WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced Amanda Clinton as a Spotlight candidate ahead of her June 10th special election for Oklahoma House District 71. State Democrats have been showing up and winning in blue, red, and battleground districts across the country to strengthen the firewall against the chaos in Washington.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“Oklahomans deserve leaders who will fight to protect the basic needs and programs supporting their communities, and with Amanda Clinton on the ballot, that leadership is in reach. Democrats in state legislatures have consistently overperformed, flipped red seats blue, and held their ground in special elections– victories that matter more than ever while statehouses are on the frontlines of protecting people from the chaos in Washington. The DLCC is proud to support Amanda as she challenges the extremism that threatens to take her community backward.”
Amanda Clinton (HD-71) is a small business owner and citizen of the Cherokee Nation running for the Oklahoma House in a June special election to protect a key Democratic seat. Amanda worked as a journalist helping tell important stories from her community, and today she works with Tribal governments to help them best serve their people. Now, Amanda is ready to step up and lead her district by pushing back against years of Republican mismanagement that has left her state with one of the highest rates of child poverty in the nation and some of the worst public access to quality education and health care.
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
