The Lieutenant Governor plays a critical role in breaking ties in the narrowly divided Democrat-led Virginia Senate

WASHINGTON— Today, the DLCC announced Democratic nominee for Virginia Lieutenant Governor Sen. Ghazala Hashmi as a Spotlight Candidate. The race for Lieutenant Governor is both highly competitive and extremely consequential for the state legislature, as the winner will hold the power to break any tied votes in the narrowly divided Virginia Senate for the next four years.

“The DLCC is focused on using every tool at our disposal to ensure state legislative Democrats in Virginia have the power to fight back against Trump and Washington Republicans’ reckless agenda. Along with defending our majority in the Virginia House, it is imperative that we elect Senator Hashmi this November to ensure that Virginia’s next Lieutenant Governor will use their power, including the power to break ties in the Virginia Senate, to stand up for all Virginians.”
