RELEASE: DLCC Spotlights Iowa Special Election Candidate to Break GOP Senate Supermajority

In state legislative special elections this year, state Democrats have already flipped 2 double-digit Trump seats – this Iowa Senate seat could be next

WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced Catelin Drey as a Spotlight candidate ahead of her special election to the Iowa Senate on August 26th. Catelin is running against an extreme opponent who opposes abortion even for rape victims and likened reproductive freedom to the Holocaust.

Flipping this seat would break the toxic GOP supermajority in the chamber, which has imposed extremism on Iowans and been complicit in Washington Republicans’ attacks on working families, and allow Democrats to block Governor Reynolds from making controversial gubernatorial appointments.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“While Republicans from Iowa to Washington undermine working families, state Democrats are stepping up to protect economic opportunities and health care in their communities. As a mother who clearly understands what’s at stake for the next generation of Iowans, Catelin Drey will put families first and is the right candidate to flip this seat and break the extreme Republican supermajority in the Iowa Senate. State legislative leaders are working tirelessly to provide the leadership and strength Americans deserve, and the DLCC is proud to support Catelin’s campaign.”

Catelin Drey (SD-01) is running in an August special election to flip a seat in the Iowa Senate, break Republicans’ supermajority, and bring a young mom’s perspective to Des Moines. Catelin is campaigning on momentum following an Iowa Senate special election upset and overperformances for Iowa Democrats this year, even in districts that Trump won in the last election. If she wins, she’s committed to putting working families back at the forefront of Iowa politics after years of Republican policy failures have made it increasingly difficult for parents to raise their kids in the state.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
