GOP legislators’ extremism is reaching new heights with attacks on pride flags and marriage equality, which has been the law of the land for a decade
WASHINGTON — State Republicans continue to double down on anti-LGBTQ+ culture wars in legislative sessions this year instead of lowering costs and solving their communities’ real issues.
- Anti-LGBTQ+ extremism is front and center in Virginia, where GOP nominee for Governor, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, hand-wrote a note that she was “morally opposed” to the same-sex marriage bill passed last year.
- Republicans in Oklahoma, Michigan, Idaho, North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota introduced resolutions that ask the Supreme Court to overturn the landmark 2015 Obergefell decision that legalized same-sex marriage
- Bills in over a dozen states would ban Pride flags from public buildings.
This isn’t an isolated effort – Republicans in state legislatures across the country are moving in lockstep with the Trump administration. Over 570 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in legislative sessions this year, showing Republicans are willing to go even further in their extreme attacks against LGBTQ+ people.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Communications Director Lauren Chou issued the following statement:
“Prices are rising, economic opportunities are disappearing, yet state Republicans are focused on stripping Americans of their freedoms. Marriage equality has been settled for a decade now, but with Trump in office, Republicans are feeling more empowered than ever to pursue the most extreme parts of their agenda. The GOP’s relentless anti-LGBTQ+ extremism knows no bounds. Democrats in the states will not only protect fundamental freedoms from GOP attacks but will continue fighting for equal protections for all. While the federal government lacks the leadership to protect LGBTQ+ people, the DLCC is committed to championing state Democrats who are getting it done.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
