In Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia, Trump’s MAGA allies in the states are working to silence voters at the ballot box

WASHINGTON — With Election Day less than 70 days away, state Republicans are working overtime to purge residents from state voter rolls. The states have become ground zero for battles around who can cast their vote, and Republicans are particularly honing in on key battleground states like Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia to launch their most aggressive attacks.

These actions are part of a broader GOP strategy to use their power in the states to suppress voting rights and undermine democracy ahead of elections that will decide the future of fundamental freedoms. In 2024, state Republicans’ voter suppression efforts could be consequential for races up and down the ticket, especially in state legislative races which will be decided by the slimmest of margins in battleground states.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Interim Communications Director Sam Paisley issued the following statement:

“Republican schemes to purge voters from the rolls in key battleground states are designed to deny access to the ballot box while sowing fear and mistrust in our election system. Republicans aren’t winning on the issues, which is why they’re resigning to undemocratic measures to maintain their hold on power. The most aggressive attempts to suppress the vote are emerging at the state level, which is why it’s paramount that we elect Democrats to statehouses in 2024. Trump and his allies are poised to carry out their extreme agenda upending our democracy, and state legislatures are on the frontlines of preventing their agenda from becoming a reality. The DLCC will continue sounding the alarm on GOP attacks on the right to vote and ensuring champions of our democracy are elected to statehouses across the country.”

The DLCC is the official arm of the Democratic Party with the sole mission of building Democratic power in the states and setting the national agenda at the state level. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
