WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced Sean Faircloth as a Spotlight candidate ahead of his February 25th special election in Maine to defend Democratic power. Sean’s win would hold a key seat in the Maine House, where Democrats currently hold a narrow majority. Winning this special election would help cement Democrats’ agenda to support Maine’s communities, from making Maine more affordable for working families to ensuring access to comprehensive health care and quality public schools.
Sean Faircloth (HD-24) is a former member of the Maine legislature running to join the Maine House and bolster its narrow Democratic majority. Sean has always fought to improve life for Maine’s working families and was instrumental in passing over thirty pieces of legislation, ranging from protecting homeowners from lead exposure to ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable children. If Sean wins his special election, he’s ready to jump back into the fight against right-wing extremism threatening his state.
There have already been five special elections in 2025, and Democrats are consistently overperforming. Just last week, we flipped the first seat of the cycle in Iowa and defended our majority in the Minnesota Senate. There are no off-years in state legislative elections and there are already more than two dozen additional special elections scheduled or expected in the months ahead, including majority-deciding special elections in two states: Minnesota and Pennsylvania.
State legislatures are on the frontlines of serving as the legislative firewall against Trump and Washington Republicans and fostering Democratic leadership, which is why these special election wins are so consequential. Building durable Democratic power in the states is critical in the months and years ahead to protect core rights and counter MAGA extremism.
