The DLCC launched its target map including the Virginia House, where the committee has already helped defend a one-seat Democratic majority
WASHINGTON— After the Democratic majorities in the Virginia General Assembly delivered wins for working families, GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed legislation that would have created economic opportunity, lowered costs, and made families safer.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Communications Director Lauren Chou issued the following statement:
“Glenn Youngkin and Virginia Republicans have come out and declared they are opposed to supporting working families, building safer communities, and expanding access to affordable health care. Virginians affirmed support for Democratic priorities in two majority-making special elections in January, but Glenn Youngkin doesn’t care. Luckily, voters have a chance to make their voices heard in November and not only redeliver a House Democratic majority but elect a Democratic trifecta that can protect progress and deliver for the people.”
Youngkin vetoed measures that would have:
- Raised the minimum wage for 365,000 Virginians
- Created a state paid family and medical leave program for workers
- Protected Virginia families with new laws to bolster gun safety and reduce violence
- Including banning the sale of assault-style weapons and holding the gun lobby accountable for preventing traffickingÂ
The DLCC protected the Democratic majorities in both Virginia chambers earlier this year in special elections, ensuring a legislative agenda supporting working families, but Gov. Youngkin continues to stand in the way of relief and progress for Virginians. The DLCC is laser-focused on re-electing and electing Virginia Democrats who have focused on increasing economic opportunity, expanding access to health care, raising wages, and keeping communities safe.
The DLCC is the official arm of the Democratic Party with the sole mission of building Democratic power in the states and setting the national agenda at the state level. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
