With new fair maps in place, Democrats have recruited candidates in every Senate seat on the ballot for the first time in more than 20 years and 97 candidates in the Assembly – the most since the GOP gerrymander of 2011.

WASHINGTON — Democratic candidate recruitment for state legislative candidates in battleground Wisconsin is strong, offering promising odds for Democrats to build substantial power in the legislature in 2024. With new fair maps in place, Democrats have recruited candidates in every Senate seat on the ballot for the first time in over 20 years, and 97 seats in the Assembly, the highest number since the Republican gerrymander of 2011. As the DLCC looks to protect Gov. Evers’ veto, make gains, and shift the balance of power in the legislature, candidate recruitment is the essential foundation for success. Wisconsin Democrats have the quality candidates and infrastructure needed to gain ground in both legislative chambers and in all corners of the state.

The DLCC has been hard at work making early investments and collaborating with in-state partners to build an impressive crop of Democratic candidates with deep ties to their communities whose victories will help candidates up and down the ballot. Wisconsin was one of the worst gerrymandered states in the country, and the new maps passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. Tony Evers reduce gerrymandering and create an opportunity for Democrats to gain ground.

To build our victories against MAGA extremists and provide a boost to Democrats up and down the ballot, there’s never been a better time to support the DLCC. Visit us at DLCC.org to learn more.

Wisconsin Senate Minority Leader Dianne Hesselbein issued the following statement:

“For more than a decade, Legislative Republicans have been insulated from accountability because of hand-drawn maps that preserved only their interests and protected their manufactured majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. Wisconsinites are reinvigorated with fair maps finally in play, and voters are excited about the opportunity of representation that reflects their preferences. Senate Democrats are answering this call by running quality candidates in every Senate race this fall and giving people a real choice.”

Wisconsin Assembly Minority Leader Greta Neubauer issued the following statement:

“This is a very exciting time to be in Wisconsin. Across the state, our candidates are preparing to compete under fair maps. For over 12 years, Wisconsinites lived under the most gerrymandered maps in the country — it is not surprising that with new maps we are seeing incredible enthusiasm and more people stepping up to represent their communities. Wisconsinites are tired of the Republican majority stifling progress on popular issues like expanding affordable healthcare, protecting our reproductive rights, supporting working families, and so much more. Our candidates are ready to get out on doors, talk to folks about the issues that matter to their communities, and win in November.”

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“Strong Democratic candidates are foundational to our goals in Wisconsin this year, and the stakes of the 2024 legislative elections are high. Our impressive candidates and new maps give us an exciting opportunity to make gains in Wisconsin and transform what is possible. Long gone are the days when an aggressive gerrymander dictated Wisconsin’s future. With Democratic candidates in every single Senate seat and 97 Democrats running in the Assembly, we’re moving Wisconsin out of the past and toward a progressive future where we can continue to protect the governor’s veto and safeguard Wisconsinites from Republican extremists in the legislature.”

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures and building state infrastructure. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
