WASHINGTON — Trump, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen, and Nebraska legislative Republicans are encouraging the Nebraska legislature to pursue anti-democratic efforts that would make it easier for Trump to win all five of Nebraska’s electoral votes. Nebraska is one of two states that awards one electoral vote to the Presidential candidate who wins each congressional district, but Republicans are working to subvert this already decided-upon allocation mid-election season to throw the election to Donald Trump. The proposed change, introduced by Republicans in the legislature, would amend the process to become a winner-takes-all system that would almost certainly swing the election in Trump’s favor this fall.
Across the country, we’re seeing Republican efforts to subvert the will of voters and threaten our democracy. The state legislative ballot level is the most important for protecting democracy and voting rights and we need to elect more pro-democracy Democrats to state legislatures, like in Nebraska, which control the levers of power when it comes to how our elections are being run and electoral votes are being allocated.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:
“Republicans in Nebraska trying to change the electoral process mid-stream for the sole benefit of Donald Trump represents yet another threat to democracy that state Republicans are pushing. The strength of our democracy lies in state legislatures, and Republicans in Nebraska are making moves to disenfranchise voters and change the process to maximize Donald Trump’s chances of winning the Presidential election.
“This type of anti-democratic extremism is emblematic of the priorities of GOP state legislators across the country. The reality is many of Trump’s most extreme and loyal followers are currently serving in state legislatures across the country. These Trump loyalists and die-hards would be a rubber stamp on Trump’s dangerous agenda, and they must be defeated to ensure MAGA priorities aren’t enacted in the states. The only way to preserve our democracy is to elect Democrats to state legislatures across the country.”
