SPECIAL ELECTION DAY: Majority-Making Elections in Virginia Today Will Determine Legislative Control 

Democrats’ one-seat majorities in both the House of Delegates and the state Senate are on the line in key special elections in Loudoun County 

WASHINGTON—DLCC Spotlight candidates JJ Singh and Del. Kannan Srinivasan are running in must-win special elections in Virginia today, which will defend Democratic majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. Preserving Democratic power in Virginia is crucial ahead of the upcoming legislative sessions and November’s elections, when the full House of Delegates is on the ballot. 

The DLCC has been laying the foundation for success in preserving our Democratic majorities since these special elections were first announced last year. Last month, the DLCC designated Singh and Del. Srinivasan to our Spotlight program, and we sent our first investments of the cycle – a $100K investment – to the Virginia caucuses. The DLCC has been on the ground supporting these candidates’ campaigns and sounding the alarm on the stakes. As Project 2025 and the MAGA agenda are likely to relegate more responsibility to state legislatures, Democratic power in states like Virginia is our best defense against extremism from the Trump administration.
