State Democrats Flip Eighth Seat from Red to Blue in Second Victory of the Night
DLCC celebrates as New Hampshire Democrats claim Republican stronghold in Rockingham

WASHINGTON — Tonight Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Executive Director Jessica Post congratulates Representative-elect Kari Lerner on her victory in the special election for New Hampshire House District Rockingham-4. Lerner’s victory brings the total number of seats picked up by state Democrats nationwide to eight since the November election, and is the second seat to flip from red to blue this evening following Senator-elect Annette Taddeo’s win in Florida earlier in the night.

A realtor and former educator who was a first-time candidate, Lerner carried the election with 50% of the vote, improving on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 performance by a whopping 25 points and President Obama’s 2012 performance by 23 points.

“Representative-elect Lerner’s victory tonight exemplifies state Democrats’ building momentum and Republicans should be worried,” said Post. “Thanks to Kari’s hard work, Democrats now hold the fourth reddest district in the state. Kari’s message of responsible leadership and government accountability resonated with Rockingham County voters. The DLCC congratulates Representative-elect Lerner on a great campaign and we look forward to putting New Hampshire Republicans on notice in 2018.”

This victory is just the latest in a series of Democratic special election wins as the DLCC lays the groundwork for substantial gains in 2017 and 2018 in statehouses across the country. After tonight’s win, Democrats have successfully flipped eight legislative seats from red to blue and overperformed in the vast majority of legislative special elections since Trump’s inauguration.

State Democrats recently scored critical victories in Iowa, Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, and elsewhere. DLCC looks forward to continuing their support of Democrats in Virginia, New Jersey, Washington, and beyond as they build on Democrats’ winning momentum heading into the 2018 elections.
