STRATEGY NOTE: Reproductive Freedom Is a Winning Issue in Tough Districts

WASHINGTON — Last night, Democrats flipped a critical swing seat from red to blue by running on support for abortion access in this historically Republican district. With their slim majority, the New Hampshire GOP is advancing an extreme anti-abortion agenda that is incredibly inhumane and unpopular. The independent expenditure arm of the DLCC invested in this special election to ensure a Democratic win in this critical chamber, highlighting the Republican opponent’s anti-abortion record. The DLCC also provided resources to build critical field infrastructure to set Democrats up for success in this chamber. This is clearly a winning issue for Democrats as suburban voters in a historically Republican area rejected the extreme right-wing policies of the Republican Party in power.

“Democrats are winning in tough districts by running on support for abortion access in the face of an increasingly radical Republican Party,” said Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post. “The Democratic victory in a historically Republican district in New Hampshire last night showed that voters are rejecting the extreme anti-abortion policies that the GOP has pursued across the country. With the Supreme Court threatening an end to Roe, it is more important than ever to invest in races at the state level to stop these horrifying policies from passing.”

New Hampshire Republicans have used their majority to pass archaic anti-abortion legislation. The New Hampshire GOP recently signed into law an anti-abortion law that bans the procedure after 24 weeks with no exceptions for rape or incest and felony penalties for doctors. Because of the heinous abortion ban in Texas, New Hampshire Republicans are now even more emboldened to pass a similar six-week abortion ban. Democratic control of state legislatures is the only thing standing between the extreme GOP and the American people.
