Virginia Democrats Dominate Legislative Fundraising

WASHINGTON – The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is applauding Virginia Democrats on their massive first-quarter fundraising haul and huge number of individual contributors.

“With just 6 months until Election Day, Virginia Democrats are showing we have the momentum and resources to win this November,” said DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post. “The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee made an early investment pledge of $1 million to Virginia, we’ve committed on-the-ground staff to the state, and we’re coordinating on candidate recruitment and training. These early fundraising numbers show our investment is paying off and Democrats will flip both chambers of the General Assembly.”

Democratic candidates, committees and the state party raised almost $2 million more than the GOP in the first quarter of 2019. The early gains mirror the first quarter of 2017, which preceded a historic blue wave.

Democratic Candidates & Committees: $4.9 million

Republican Candidates & Committees: $3.2 million

Democrats also far exceeded Republicans in individual donations by thousands of contributions, showing real grassroots support and growing momentum. The massive fundraising haul and huge number of individual contributors is supporting evidence for a DLCC poll that shows excitement among Virginia Democrats exceeds Republican enthusiasm, voters are more concerned with real-world issues than politics, and Trump remains an albatross for Republicans.

“Virginia Republicans were so busy convincing themselves they still had a chance at winning, it appears they forgot to fundraise,” Post said. “While the GOP continues to focus on politics, Virginia Democrats are talking to voters about the schools in their communities, their commutes to work and protecting health care.”

Democrats need to flip just two seats in the Senate and the House of Delegates to gain majorities in both Virginia General Assembly chambers. Last week, the DLCC endorsed 17 candidates in its Spotlight program — including teachers, veterans and community leaders — to provide them with the resources, attention and support needed to win their elections.
