The DLCC will continue to fight to shift the balance of state power in Wisconsin
WASHINGTON —Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley won’t seek reelection next spring, raising the stakes for the balance of power in Wisconsin. This retirement sets up a battle for control of the state supreme court in April 2025 – liberals’ majority on the court hangs in the balance, and conservatives likely won’t have another opportunity to try to regain control of the court until 2026 if they lose this race. This seat will determine the future of fundamental freedoms in Wisconsin, as the court has ruled on major voting rights cases, struck down gerrymandered GOP legislative maps, and could soon decide on abortion rights in the battleground state. This race shows there are no off years for the DLCC, and we are committed to fundamentally transforming state power in Wisconsin.
As the balance of power in the court hangs in the balance, building Democratic control in the state legislature this year is essential. Reversing the Republican takeover of this state, protecting the Democratic Governor’s veto, and looking for opportunities to take advantage of new maps to shift the balance of power is a top priority for the DLCC. 2024 will set the landscape for this key supreme court race next year.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:
“Justice Bradley’s retirement sets up a crucial supreme court race in Wisconsin to kick off 2025. This retirement puts the spotlight back on Wisconsin, where 2024 is a huge year with new legislative maps. Whether it is a battle for control of the legislature or the court – the future of fundamental freedoms are on the ballot. There are no off years in the states or for the DLCC, and what happens in state legislative races this year will set the stage for the stakes of this race next year. We’re intent on building state power in Wisconsin and continuing to show how important state races are – both in the legislature and on the state supreme court. Wisconsin is a top priority for the DLCC, and we will support both 2024 legislative elections and this key supreme court race next year as we fundamentally build Democratic power in this key battleground.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures and building state infrastructure. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
