WASHINGTON — North Carolina Democrats prevented Republicans from winning a supermajority in North Carolina, protecting Democratic Governor Roy Cooper’s ability to veto the GOP’s MAGA agenda. Democrats in the legislature have the numbers they need to stop radical abortion bans, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, and handouts for the top 1%. This victory is a win for abortion rights in the south and will keep North Carolina a safe haven for reproductive health care as its neighboring states implement extreme bans.

“Democrats just dashed the North Carolina GOP’s dreams of ramming through abortion bans and Don’t Say Gay bills,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “North Carolina voters have given Democrats a critical lever of power to protect Governor Roy Cooper’s veto, reproductive health care, our children’s education and LGBTQ+ youth from North Carolina’s gerrymandered GOP legislature. ”

Earlier this year, the DLCC launched its Path to The Majority strategy to protect Democratic power, and that includes blocking GOP supermajorities in key states. The DLCC worked closely with North Carolina Democrats and state partners to lay the groundwork for strong campaigns across the state and durable power built to last beyond this year.

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. This cycle, the committee raised $50 million at its fastest pace ever to elect state Democrats across the country. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
