WASHINGTON — Democrat Chuck Grassie won a toss-up special election in Strafford-8 today – putting Democrats just three seats shy of an outright majority. Democrats would have won the New Hampshire House with only 11 more votes in 2022, and these razor thin margins will mean that the chamber will remain competitive throughout the year. This win comes after a string of victories in Pennsylvania and Virginia that highlight Democrats’ growing momentum at the state legislative level of the ballot.

“This victory is a critical first step in Democrats taking control of the New Hampshire House,” said interim DLCC President Heather Williams. “Congratulations to Chuck Grassie on a hard fought and consequential win. Democrats are heading into this new election cycle with the wind at our backs, having already notched special election victories in Virginia and Pennsylvania. It’s clear that Republicans’ electoral fortunes haven’t improved in the new year, and the DLCC is committed to supporting Democrats across the country as they challenge the MAGA GOP agenda in statehouses.”

Rep. Chuck Grassie (HD-Strafford 8) is a community leader and champion for his local Rochester community. He has worked tirelessly to cut health care costs and protect New Hampshire’s environment during his three terms in the state House. This must-win election allowed  Democrats to protect a swing seat, grow closer to a majority, and advance a bold new future for New Hampshire.

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
