As chaos reigns in Washington, the DLCC is bringing expertise from across the country to strategize and build Democrats’ foundation of power in the states
WASHINGTON— Yesterday, the DLCC announced the addition of seven new members to the DLCC Board of Directors, including: California Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas, Colorado Senate President James Coleman, Illinois Speaker Pro Tempore Kambium “Kam” Buckner, Michigan Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, Oregon Speaker of the House Julie Fahey, Virginia Speaker of the House Don Scott, and Wisconsin Assembly Democratic Leader Greta Neubauer. These leaders from across the country represent the future of the Democratic party and will help drive Democrats’ nationwide strategy to win state legislative elections.
Here’s what they’re saying:
Politico: First in Score – Staffing Up
- The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announced seven additions to its board on Monday. They are California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, Colorado Senate President James Coleman, Illinois Speaker Pro Temp Kambium Buckner, Michigan Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, Oregon House Speaker Julie Fahey, Virginia House Speaker Don Scott and Wisconsin Assembly Democratic Leader Greta Neubauer.
Meidas Touch: DLCC Adds Seven New Board Members to Fight MAGA Extremism at the State Level
- “As state Democrats continue to over perform in special elections and counter the chaos in Washington, we are thrilled to lay the foundation for Democratic success up and down the ticket,” Williams continued.
- The DLCC hopes the new generation of leadership will be a bulwark for rights at the state-level, where Republicans typically test out draconian new assaults on freedoms that are then replicated at the federal level.
California Politico Playbook: Rivas’ New Gig
- Rivas comes to the DLCC at a crucial moment, as Democrats look to state legislatures to more aggressively counter Trump’s “extremism” in Washington. In a statement, Rivas emphasized the Golden State’s status as a fundraising ATM: “As one of the world’s largest economies and a powerful donor state, California’s legislators must, can, and will leverage this to fight Trump’s dangerous policies.”
Colorado Politics: Colorado Senate President James Coleman joins Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee board
- He was first exposed to the DLCC last year after attending an event in Denver with then-Senate President Steve Fenberg and House Speaker Julie McCluskie and a few other lawmakers. “I was just blown away,” he said. Coleman got to meet other presidents, speakers and legislators from around the country who were trying to generate support for good Democratic candidates for state legislatures, and he wanted to be part of that.
- “If I can do that work here, and help do the same work around the country, I said I would be honored,” and he’s excited to get to work when it becomes official on Monday.
Illinois Politico Playbook: Kam Buckner Named to DLCC Board
- Illinois House Democratic leader Kam Buckner has been named to the board of a national Democratic committee that funds state legislative races. Buckner, a Chicago Democrat who serves speaker pro tempore, is now a member of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which works to elect Democrats to state legislatures.
- Buckner drew praise from the Democratic organization for his policy expertise and his ability to work well with colleagues. “As a former college football player, he knows how to put aside personal differences and focus on what’s best for his team,” according to a statement from the group.
Michigan Advance: Brinks joins board of Democratic state legislature campaign arm
- “As the first Democrat to serve as majority leader in my chamber since the 1980s, I know firsthand what Democratic majorities can achieve here in Michigan and across the country as we continue to advocate on behalf of working families,” Brinks said.
The Oregonian: Oregon’s House speaker chosen to help Democrats nationwide win state office in the wake of Trump victory
- “Part of how we fight back effectively against what’s happening federally is working together with our colleagues from other states,” Fahey said. “As we’re seeing that chaos reigns in D.C. and Congress is unable to do much, Democrats need a strong foundation in the states.”
Wisconsin Examiner: Assembly Minority Leader Greta Neubauer joins DLCC’s board as Dems looks to win majorities in 2026
- Neubauer said DLCC President Heather Williams asked her to join the board and it’s a sign of the organization’s “deep commitment” to Wisconsin and understanding that a trifecta could be possible in 2026. “They want to be a part of helping us flip this state blue,” Neubauer said. “DLCC of course is focused on the national strategy of supporting democratic legislatures to win majorities in legislative chambers. They have had great success in the last few years… so I’m excited to be part of that national strategy work.”
- In the past, the DLCC has invested in helping Wisconsin Democrats win and outlined strategies for winning targeted seats.
Virginia Mercury: Virginia House Speaker Scott joins national Democratic campaign board
- “The number one thing that we’ve learned is that we have to meet people where they are,” Scott said. “Most people are trying to figure out how they put food on the table, how they afford the things that they need, whether they have good schools for their kids, and whether it’s safe to live in the community, and that’s what we’ve been focused on.”
