DLCC Wins Pennsylvania Special Election
WASHINGTON — Tonight in Pennsylvania, Representative-elect Helen Tai flipped House District 178 from red to blue, ending Republicans’ 35-year-hold on the district and marking Democrats’ 41st flip since the 2016 election.
“Congratulations to Representative-elect Helen Tai on her incredible win tonight,” said DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post. “Pennsylvania voters made their voices heard – they are ready to send a representative to Harrisburg who will stand up for them and advocate for government and redistricting reform, smarter investments in our public schools, and fight the opioid crisis. The DLCC looks forward to continuing our work with Pennsylvania state Democrats to win more seats in November and position Democrats for success ahead of critical 2020 redistricting.”
Former Vice President Joe Biden endorsed Tai in the special election for House District 178, which includes Northampton, Upper Makefield, New Hope, Solebury, and Wrightstown. Tai’s campaign knocked on close to 40,000 doors over the course of three months. The DLCC’s field, political, and digital departments worked consistently with national partners and staffers on the ground to ensure strategic Get Out the Vote efforts were successful in the final five days.
As the chair of her town Board of Supervisors, Helen Tai has spent years fighting for her community, working side by side with other Solebury residents to eliminate government waste, protect the environment, and stand up for local schools. Tai was also one of the DLCC’s Spotlight Races and she claimed victory in the special election for HD-178, flipping the district from red to blue – ending Republicans’ 35-year hold on the district – and putting Democrats on the path to take back the state’s lower chamber.
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs, which has led to Democrats flipping 41 seats since Trump’s inauguration. The DLCC is building on Democrats’ winning momentum and continues to lay the groundwork for substantial gains in 2018 in statehouses nationwide. State Democrats recently scored critical victories in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, and elsewhere, while also leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies.
