GOP state legislators across the country are currently engaged in a mid-cycle redistricting scheme to rig congressional maps and cheat the system to protect their slipping majority in the U.S. House. To counter these efforts, the DLCC is leading the national strategy to put Democrats on offense by winning more majorities in state legislatures.
Trump knows his agenda to cut health care access, raise prices, and eliminate American jobs is wildly unpopular – which is why he has to rig the maps to hold onto power. Typically, congressional maps are redrawn every ten years after the census, with the next one set for 2030. But Trump is calling on MAGA state legislators to rig the maps NOW to escape accountability and lock in their power through 2030. Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina have fallen in line, and states like Indiana and Florida are following suit.
The DLCC is calling on Democratic state lawmakers to go on offense and use every available power to stop Republicans from cheating their way to victory in 2026 – including by pursuing mid-cycle redistricting in blue states. California has already acted quickly, and voters have approved a redrawn map with five new safe blue seats to counterbalance the five new safe red seats created by Texas. Legislators in states like Virginia and New York could follow suit.
The long-term strategy to end Republican gerrymandering is already in motion: flipping state legislatures from red to blue to give Democrats more control of the redistricting process. But we don’t need to wait until next November to make an impact — In 2025, Democrats won elections in Virginia and New Jersey, and more critical special elections are coming up in early 2026.
Majority-deciding races are always around the corner, and the DLCC constantly seeks opportunities to build Democratic power year-round. Our 2026 Target Map hones in on battleground chambers where your grassroots support can have the greatest impact.

The fight for our democracy cannot wait another year, or even another day. The battle for the future of our country is happening now, and it’s happening in state legislatures.
