WASHINGTON — The Michigan House and Senate just broke for Democrats, giving the party complete control of the Michigan legislature for the first time in a generation. The DLCC worked alongside state partners for years to lay the groundwork for this critical victory. Republicans spent tens of millions of dollars working to defend their majorities in Michigan and came up short. Voting on fairer maps for the first time in a decade, Michiganders all across the state rejected Republicans and the fringe policies they represent— ushering in a brighter and equal future for Michigan.

Democrats will now have trifecta control of the Michigan state government. Michigan’s Democratic legislature will also protect elections from future MAGA attacks as a key state on the path to the presidency.

“Don’t let the door hit you on the way out! Michigan Republicans just found out what a diverse, motivated electorate looks like when voting on fairer maps,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “These results show that millions of Michiganders trust Democrats to protect abortion, build an economy that works for everyone, and reject GOP hate. MAGA Republicans only have their extreme agenda to blame for losing the Michigan legislature despite their massive fundraising and historical advantages across the state.”

Michigan was a crucial target in the DLCC’s Path to The Majority strategy to protect Democratic power and make a play for vulnerable GOP majorities. The DLCC invested nearly $2 million in Michigan this cycle, helping state partners lay the groundwork for strong campaigns across the state. Meanwhile, the modern MAGA GOP is fundamentally out of step with the people of Michigan, and this result is a resounding confirmation of that.

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. This cycle, the committee raised $50 million to elect state Democrats across the country. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
