WASHINGTON — After launching its Threats to Democracy website last month, the DLCC is updating its database to reflect the more than 750 GOP Threats to Democracy and 25 confirmed insurrectionists running for state legislature in November, bringing the total of MAGA threats who have pushed Trump’s “Big Lie” at the legislative level since the 2020 election to over 1,140. The latest update includes 40 newly identified GOP candidates across more than 15 states which came through the DLCC’s accountability tipline and ongoing research. With less than a month until pivotal midterm elections, these updated numbers are almost certainly an undercount and reflect just a snapshot of the existential threat the MAGA GOP poses to American democracy.

“The DLCC continues to uncover hundreds of MAGA Republicans who are running for state legislatures to spread conspiracies and overturn future elections,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “Now, with well over 750 confirmed Republican threats to democracy running for legislative seats across the country, the MAGA movement clearly has its eyes set on state legislatures. If we want to protect our elections and stop the GOP from completely upending American democracy from the ground up, we must elect Democrats to defend democracy and beat back the MAGA movement in state legislatures.”

This latest update to the site includes:

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee was the first and only entity committed to identifying, tracking, and condemning the hundreds of Republican state lawmakers who aided and abetted Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Now, its current Threats to Democracy website is the most comprehensive account of state legislators and state legislative candidates who continue to normalize anti-democratic extremism and are complicit in the ongoing attack on our democracy. With more than 7,300 state legislative seats nationwide, the research for this project is ongoing, and the list continues to grow. The DLCC research team is actively soliciting tips for additional information at [email protected].
