Democrats have gone 8 for 8 this cycle in must-win special elections for their majority.
WASHINGTON — Since winning a single-seat majority in the 2022 midterms, Pennsylvania Democrats have faced eight vacancies and subsequent special elections threatening to flip control of the chamber back to MAGA Republicans. Thanks to consistent effort and strong candidates, Pennsylvania House Democrats have yet again defended their majority tonight after Democrats Keith Harris (HD-195) and Andre Carroll (HD-201) both won their special elections. The next major test in this battleground state will be on Nov 5th when all 203 seats will be back on the ballot.
While Pennsylvania Democrats have used their house majority this cycle to work on behalf of the people and move Pennsylvania forward by advancing legislation to increase gun safety, protect reproductive freedom, and advocate for equal pay, Senate Republicans are working to vilify immigrants, target LGBTQ+ curriculum in schools, and undermine voting access. Pennsylvania is a top priority for the DLCC this cycle, and our slate of Spotlight candidates represent the best opportunities to protect and build Democratic power.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“We cannot take our state legislative majorities for granted and it has been a year-round effort for the DLCC and our partners in Pennsylvania to defend this single-seat majority in the Pennsylvania House. Tonight’s victories for Rep-elect Harris and Rep-elect Carroll remind us of the importance of every state legislative seat as we gear up for the full chamber to be back on the ballot this November.”
“Majorities in our state legislatures will determine the future of our freedoms and rights and so while we celebrate these wins tonight, we must also recommit to the important work as the majority is again on the line in November.
The DLCC is the official arm of the Democratic Party with the sole mission of building Democratic power in the states and setting the national agenda at the state level. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
