For the fifth time this year, Democrats in Pennsylvania once again won a contested race to maintain their one seat majority in the Pennsylvania House. DLCC Spotlight candidate Lindsay Powell emerged victorious in the critical Pennsylvania HD-21 election, protecting Democrats’ majority and stopping Republicans once again from taking control of the chamber.

Since the beginning of the year, the DLCC has won the majority of state legislative special elections nationwide as Democrats continue to outperform in these races. As we head into crucial general elections in November in states like Virginia, the DLCC’s win streak only bodes well for our chances in November.

“Freedom is on the line in statehouses across the country. Once again, voters rejected Pennsylvania Republicans’ radical policies, and for the fifth time this year, Democrats have won a crucial special election to hold the majority in the Pennsylvania House,” said DLCC Interim President Heather Williams. “Republicans across the country are finding out what happens when they run against crucial access to reproductive health care and run towards attacking Americans’ fundamental freedoms. In district after district, they’re finding an electorate that is fighting back against their extremist views and policies. We congratulate Representative Powell and we look forward to watching her advocate for her constituents in the Pennsylvania House.”

Rep-elect Lindsay Powell (HD-21) is a lifelong public servant and social justice advocate and currently works at a non-profit, InnovatePGH. Previously, she served as Pittsburgh’s assistant chief of staff. In this position, Lindsay led the first citywide digital equity initiative, expanding access to technology and broadband. She also oversaw the expansion of the summer free meal program to ensure kids didn’t go hungry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
