WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announced Florida HD-35 Democratic candidate Tom Keen as the newest addition to our slate of Spotlight candidates this year. He is running against an extremist MAGA Republican opponent in a critical special election on January 16th to represent Florida’s 35th House district in eastern Orange and eastern Osceola counties.
As a decorated 21-year military veteran, Tom has sacrificed for our nation and will stand up for protecting fundamental rights in the Florida legislature. Tom is running for the Florida House to protect reproductive freedoms, fight for affordable housing, and counter senseless book bans. The DLCC extends support to Tom and Florida’s strong Democratic House caucus, longtime partners of our organization.
DLCC interim President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“Democrats in the Florida legislature are ready to fight for all Floridians, and Tom is the perfect fit to aid that battle. Tom is no stranger to tough fights as a decorated military veteran – sacrificing for our nation and the values we hold dear. His commitment to uplifting Florida’s communities, protecting reproductive freedoms, and safeguarding LGBTQ+ rights is sorely needed in the Florida State Legislature, which has been a hotbed for extremism.”
“As we work to break the Republican supermajority, every single seat matters to shift the balance of power in Florida. The DLCC is proud to support Tom in his race and will be there every step of the way to help Tom flip this seat as we build Democratic power and combat Florida Republicans’ extreme, dangerous agenda.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures and building state infrastructure. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
