DLCC Applauds Democrat Kevin Cavanaugh On His Critical Special Election Win
Senator-Elect Cavanaugh’s Victory Puts The GOP-Controlled Chamber in Play Ahead of 2018
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tonight the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is celebrating a decisive win in New Hampshire Senate District 16 — a critical special election that was featured on DLCC’s newly launched Spotlight Races page. DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post congratulated New Hampshire’s newest state Senator, Democrat Kevin Cavanaugh, on his victory. In 2016, Democrats flipped SD-16 by just over 600 votes — defending this competitive seat, Cavanaugh put New Hampshire’s GOP-controlled state Senate in play ahead of 2020 redistricting.
“As a long-time advocate for working families, Senator-elect Kevin Cavanaugh has dedicated his life to uplifting his community and will continue to fight for Granite staters in the senate,” said Post. “DLCC is proud of our work supporting this race, and we’re thrilled to have Sen.-elect Cavanaugh pioneer the first of many wins to come in our priority races. This latest victory underscores the swell of Democratic enthusiasm surrounding legislative elections across the country, as we just saw in Oklahoma two weeks ago, and DLCC will continue to work with state Democrats to build on our winning momentum heading into more 2017 and 2018 elections.”
Tonight’s win follows two other New Hampshire victories: Rep. Edie DesMarais’ win this past May when she flipped a state House seat from red to blue, and Rep.-elect Kris Schultz’s win last week securing a state House seat for Democrats. Since Trump’s inauguration, Democrats have flipped four legislative seats and have overperformed in almost every legislative special election. State Democrats have claimed additional victories in Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, and more. DLCC looks forward to continuing our support of Democrats in Virginia, New Jersey, Washington, Florida, and beyond as they build on Democrats’ winning momentum heading into 2018 elections.
