DLCC Board Member Speaker Sara Gideon Calls Out Maine Republicans For Detrimental Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This holiday weekend Maine Republican Governor Paul LePage and GOP state representatives have failed their constituents by ensuring an unnecessary and detrimental government shutdown. Rather than passing the bipartisan state budget that had passed the state Senate (33-1), Maine Republicans have once again resorted to obstructionism at the expense of Mainers. DLCC Board member and Maine Speaker of the House Sara Gideon issued the following statement:

“I am angered, but also deeply saddened by the failure of the legislature to pass a budget. Democrats and Senate Republicans have exhausted every possibility to prevent this outcome. I am scared for the workers who don’t know when they’ll get their next paycheck, for the businesses whose work will come grinding to a halt, and the stability of our economy, now twice scarred with the uncertainty of a government shutdown.

“Make no mistake, this shutdown was not necessary. And make no mistake I will continue to do everything in my power to end it.”

DLCC stands with Speaker Gideon and Maine Democrats as they work to prevent further economic damage resulting from the Republican shutdown. To reach Speaker Gideon for comment, please contact the Speaker’s Communications Director, Mary-Erin Casale at 207.415.4965 or via email [email protected].
