WASHINGTON — In light of North Carolina Democratic Rep. Tricia Cotham switching her party affiliation to Republican, interim DLCC President Heather Williams is echoing House Democratic Leader Robert Reives’ call for her resignation and released the following statement:
“Rep. Cotham is pulling a bait and switch on her constituents — who voted overwhelmingly for a Democrat to represent them in the House. Handing Republicans the ability to override Governor Cooper’s veto will endanger abortion access, voting rights, and other fundamental freedoms in the state. Voters in North Carolina did not elect a GOP House supermajority and Rep. Cotham is placing politics over their interests. The DLCC is already targeting North Carolina in 2024 to break both supermajorities — and doing so is even more pressing now that Republicans have free reign to enact their extreme MAGA agenda. We stand with Democratic Leader Reives and echo his calls for Rep. Cotham’s resignation. Her constituents deserve the leadership they voted for.”
