WASHINGTON – Following Governor Whitmer signing a repeal of the state’s dangerous 1931 abortion ban that Michigan Republicans fought to defend last summer, interim DLCC President Heather Williams released the following statement:

“Finally ending this draconian abortion ban was made possible by our Democratic victories in the state legislature last year. This is another crystal-clear proof point that Democratic legislatures are critical for protecting and expanding abortion rights. As Republicans across the country continue to restrict reproductive freedom, Michigan Democrats and other Democratic-led legislatures are protecting abortion access and keeping the government out of personal decision-making. We’re grateful for the leadership of Governor Whitmer and Democrats in the Michigan House and Senate. To continue defending abortion access, the DLCC is leading the charge to protect and expand Democratic power in state legislatures across the country.”

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
