DLCC Continues Series of Special Election Victories
Democrats Hold Key NY Senate District and Flip NY Assembly Seat for Second Pickup of the Night

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Executive Director Jessica Post applauded tonight’s New York legislative special election wins. Democrat Christine Pellegrino flipped Assembly District 9, adding another seat to Democrats’ sizable majority in the chamber and becoming the second red-to-blue pickup of the Trump era. Democrat Brian Benjamin won the special election in Senate District 30, giving Democrats a majority in the 63-seat chamber.

“Congratulations to Assemblywoman-elect Pellegrino and Senator-elect Benjamin on their victories tonight,” said Post. “Assemblywoman-elect Pellegrino’s experience as a teacher and Senator-elect Benjamin’s background in community activism and affordable housing development made them outstanding candidates and will serve them well as Democratic lawmakers. DLCC is thrilled by these latest wins, which are just the most recent expressions of Democrats’ level of energy and engagement all the way down the ballot as voters reject Trump’s Republican Party.

“With Brian Benjamin’s win, Democrats again constitute a majority of the New York state Senate and have the opportunity to govern and pass progressive legislation that has been held up for too long,” Post continued. “For New York to be a progressive bulwark against the Trump agenda, the IDC must join with the Democratic Conference and not only give New Yorkers the Democratic majority they elected, but also establish New York as a key state with a Democratic governing trifecta.”
