Tom Keen’s victory is the DLCC’s first legislative flip of 2024
WASHINGTON — The DLCC’s Spotlight Candidate Tom Keen won a special election in Florida tonight, defeating a MAGA extremist, Republican Erika Booth.
Tonight’s victory marks the DLCC’s first legislative flip of 2024 and builds on our 2023 winning streak, where Democrats overperformed in special elections by six points. The DLCC is clearly carrying this momentum into 2024, as Democrats continue scoring key victories to shift the balance of power in the states and combat GOP extremism. The DLCC is running several more Spotlight Candidates in critical special elections in the next few weeks, including Jim Prokopiak who is running for a majority-making seat in the Pennsylvania House.
DLCC President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“This victory in Florida is an earthquake and shows the strength of legislative Democrats as we head into this critical election year. Rep-elect Keen’s victory delivers a blow to Florida Republicans – this was a Republican seat that DeSantis won in 2022 and they should’ve had it in the bag. This victory puts Republicans across the country on notice that Democrats have the undeniable momentum in 2024.
“This is only the first of several special elections this year and the DLCC is just getting started. As we build our momentum for November, the time to invest in state Democrats and secure more wins is now.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures and building state infrastructure. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
