WASHINGTON

In response to reports that President Trump’s campaign is laying the groundwork to have Republican state legislators award him their state’s electoral votes should he lose the election, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post released the following statement:

“President Trump has nothing but contempt for the democratic process, so it’s no surprise that his campaign is planning to defy the will of the voters. But they can carry out their cartoon villain, autocratic ploy to subvert our democracy only if Republican legislators go along with it. Every Republican state legislator in the country has to answer this question: do they support democracy or Donald Trump?”

“For far too long, Democrats have ignored the importance of state legislative elections — and we are still paying the price. This year, we have the chance to take back state chambers across the country. The next few weeks are going to be critical for the future of our democracy. Between extreme partisan gerrymandering and outright voter suppression, corruption has long been a key tenet of Republican strategy. Americans who care about our founding principles have just one option: vote them out.”

“President Trump may think that he can get away with an autocratic power grab, but we’re not going to let that happen. We’re going to hold Republicans accountable for their disastrous records this November and elect Democrats who will put our institutions over sick, partisan loyalty.”
