From both chambers of the Virginia legislature to the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court race to both chambers of the New Jersey legislature to other statewide elections, the DLCC won every major contest
WASHINGTON – Last night, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and our Democratic partners achieved total victory – sweeping every important election including gaining full control of the Virginia Legislature, winning a critical Pennsylvania Supreme Court race, and defending both chambers of the New Jersey Legislature. Democrats also scored an important victory in Ohio where voters approved a ballot measure to protect abortion access.
The DLCC invested heavily in many races, including devoting staff time and over $2.2 million into Virginia, six-figures to Pennsylvania, resources into New Jersey, and support across all of our target districts.
These victories build on the successful 2022 midterm elections in which the DLCC won four new state legislative majorities and our record of overperformance in special elections in 2023. All of this bodes well for Democrats up and down the ballot in 2024.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Interim President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee swept the 2023 elections – winning every major race and chamber we contested. This is a testament to the campaign plans we put into place and it is another huge step forward for Democratic power in the states.
“Simply put, the biggest story right now is Democratic strength in the states. State legislatures were the brightest spot for Democrats in the 2022 midterms and we have delivered again in 2023.
“In addition to having important races at the top of the ticket, 2024 will be the year of the states. We’re off to a roaring start and plan to continue this momentum as we move into the new year. Polling is not the best indicator of the strength of each party – elections are. And thanks to the work of the DLCC and our partners, Democrats stand in a strong position to win up and down the ballot next year.”

Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
