Missouri would be the only state to tax groceries and diapers, but not guns
WASHINGTON — Missouri House Republicans are pushing a bill to eliminate state and local sales taxes on guns and ammunition. This bill would make Missouri the only state to tax groceries and diapers, but not guns. Unfortunately, despite St. Louis having one of the highest gun murder rates in the country, this bill has a real chance of becoming law given it already passed the Missouri Senate last year.
Despite Missouri having one of the highest violent crime rates in the country, GOP lawmakers are plunging ahead in their agenda to make guns more accessible. Missouri Republicans’ neglect of public safety stands in stark contrast to state Democrats across the country, who have passed common sense gun safety reforms.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Press Secretary Sam Paisley issued the following statement:
“Groceries, not guns, are what Missouri families need help paying for. It’s outrageous that Missouri Republicans are working overtime to give their state the unenviable distinction of being the first in the nation to tax food but not guns. Republicans are purposefully turning a blind eye to the public safety needs of their communities – despite rates of gun violence rising in St. Louis. The reckless priorities of the Missouri GOP couldn’t be clearer, and it’s a stark contrast compared to Democrats across the country working to pass common-sense gun safety legislation. Missouri Republicans are failing their communities. One thing is certain: Democrats work to keep our communities safe. Meanwhile, Republicans are hellbent on making our communities more dangerous.”
