New Jersey Democrats Claim Record Majorities

WASHINGTON — Tonight DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post congratulated New Jersey Democrats on growing their super majorities with two more seats in the New Jersey Assembly and one more in the New Jersey Senate. Additionally, Democratic Governor-elect Phil Murphy’s landslide victory hands Democrats a governing trifecta in the state.

“Tonight New Jerseyans helped their state take a huge step forward in the fight for state progress,” said Post. “The DLCC is proud to see Democrats claim victory tonight in the Garden State. With Governor-elect Murphy in office, our Democratic legislators will be able to enact legislation previously vetoed by Governor Christie to expand access to health care, promote gun safety measures, and protect the rights of women, immigrants, and children.”

New Jersey Democrats flipped four seats previously held by Republicans:
Vin Gopal, LD-11
Troy Singleton, LD-7
John Armato, NJ AD-2
Roy Freiman, NJ AD-16

Tonight’s Democratic victories extend from coast to coast, with the DLCC flipping the Washington State Senate with Manka Dhingra’s critical special victory, tilting chamber control in Virginia, flipping two seats from red to blue in the Georgia state House, breaking the Republican supermajority in the Georgia state Senate, flipping a New Hampshire state House seat from red to blue, and winning additional special elections in Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, and South Carolina. The DLCC is proud of the programs, investments, and strategic actions it took during this cycle, and looks forward to supporting our legislators and candidates in upcoming special elections and throughout the 2018 midterm elections as Democrats prepare for 2020 redistricting.
