WASHINGTON — DLCC Spotlight Candidate Sean Faircloth just won his special election for the Maine House, continuing Democrats’ momentum in special elections this year. Holding this seat in a chamber where Democrats hold a narrow majority helps cement Democrats’ agenda to support Maine’s communities by making the state more affordable and ensuring access to health care and strong public schools. Both chambers in Maine are on the DLCC’s target map for the cycle ahead.

There are no off-years in state legislative elections, and Democrats have had impressive wins in 2025 so far:
- An Iowa Democrat recently notched the first flip of the cycle in a Trump +21 district
- Democrats defended one-seat majorities in the Minnesota Senate and Virginia House and Senate
- Delaware candidates protected two key seats in the state Senate.
There are more majority-making specials on the horizon, and bolstering Democratic power in the states to counter extremism and protect core rights and freedoms is crucial.
