WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced three 2024 Spotlight candidates in Oregon running to flip seats and strengthen the Democratic majorities in both chambers of the legislature.
The Spotlight candidates unveiled today are Anthony Broadman running for SD-27, Virginia Stapleton for HD-21, and Lesly Muñoz for HD-22.
- Lesly Muñoz is a labor organizer and daughter of Mexican immigrants running for the Oregon House. She has a chance to flip her district and unseat an incumbent who carelessly boycotted voting on a popular bill aimed at protecting both LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive freedom. Her vision for her state’s future includes the expansion of affordable housing, health care, and public education, and she’s ready to put in the work to make that vision a reality.
- Virginia Stapleton is a local leader who serves as president of the Salem City Council, and this fall, she’s running for the Oregon House. As a leader in her community, she’s been instrumental in efforts to protect the environment, address homelessness, and improve public transit. Now she’s ready to take the fight to the House, where she’s committed to working on legislation to expand access to affordable health care, housing, and education while doing everything she can to protect reproductive freedom and LGBTQ+ rights.
- Anthony Broadman is a member of the Bend City Council, now running for the Oregon Senate. In his career as a legal advocate for Tribal Governments and small businesses, Anthony routinely helps solve issues and conflicts between Indigenous communities and the federal government. If elected, he’s committed to fostering safer communities for central Oregon’s working families by addressing issues like gun violence, environmental conservation, and access to affordable housing.
The DLCC defended the Oregon legislature in 2022, and Democratic progress since then has proved the power of Democratic trifectas. For example, this year Democrats passed a package of bills that will fund new housing and homeless shelters, and last year, Democrats passed sweeping legislation to protect abortion and gender-affirming care.
Oregon is a shining example of what happens when legislatures are run under Democratic trifectas.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is proud to announce our Spotlight candidates in Oregon: Lesly Muñoz, Virginia Stapleton, and Anthony Broadman. Democratic power in Oregon has protected fundamental freedoms for communities across the state, and victory for these candidates in November would mean the Democratic majorities can continue improving Oregonians’ lives.
“The DLCC’s Spotlight program uplifts some of the best opportunities to build and cement Democratic power, and we’re thrilled to unveil this slate of Oregon candidates. As the only committee setting the agenda for the national landscape of state legislatures, our long-term strategy to build Democratic power includes highlighting champions of fundamental freedoms in every corner of the country. 2024 is the year of the states, and winning these Spotlight races will help Oregon be a shining example of the important work that state Democrats can achieve.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures and building state infrastructure. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
