WASHINGTON — Wisconsin Democrats just won enough seats to prevent Republicans from gaining a supermajority in the state legislature. This victory comes despite historic headwinds giving Republicans every advantage and redistricting maps rigged in the GOP’s favor. These victories will protect Democratic Governor Tony Ever’s veto power, allowing him to reject the GOP’s efforts to restrict abortion, put up barriers to the ballot box, and insert politics into the classroom.

“Key Democratic victories today in Wisconsin may have prevented the MAGA GOP from completely overriding the state’s election system,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “Wisconsin’s GOP has not been coy with their intentions, and every advantage, Republicans were unable to muster the numbers to completely unleash their regressive agenda on Wisconsin. This victory is a huge win for abortion rights and our democracy.”

Earlier this year, the DLCC launched its Path to The Majority strategy to not only protect Democratic power that includes blocking GOP supermajorities in key states. The DLCC invested in preventing a GOP supermajority in the state and worked closely with state partners to lay the groundwork for strong campaigns across the state.

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. This cycle, the committee raised $50 million to elect state Democrats across the country. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
