WASHINGTON — After discussing the importance of state legislatures in a post-Roe America on MSNBC’s Symone last week, DLCC President Jessica Post appeared on MSNBC’s Ayman this weekend to discuss the immediate threat Republican state lawmakers pose to our democracy. In a panel discussion with The New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow and lawyer Dean Obeidallah, Post reminded the American people that over 700 Republican state lawmakers actively aided and abetted Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Many of these anti-democratic Republicans, including at least 18 who attended the insurrection, still hold legislative office and are increasingly emboldened to use their power to threaten our electoral system and subvert our democracy.

“One thing that we know, and that we know for sure, is that [Trump] did pressure election officials. […] The thing that I find even more concerning is that the state legislators are given the right by the Constitution to allocate electoral votes and there are hundreds of state legislators who signed on to the Stop the Steal, who advanced the ‘Big Lie’ […] I think that there could be a long tail of undermined elections and this was I think the tip of the spear of what we might see in 2024, so we all have to pay attention.”

Jessica Post is the President of the DLCC, the official party committee tasked with electing Democrats to state legislatures. Under her leadership, the DLCC is leading the fight against Republican attacks on our democracy and fundamental rights in state legislatures across the country.
