WASHINGTON — In the Pennsylvania Senate’s State Government Committee’s first action this session, Republican senators advanced legislation to create extreme barriers to the ballot box. All seven Republican members of the committee supported efforts to undermine our democracy following the 2020 election and sought to reject their constituents’ votes, including Senator Cris Dush and known insurrectionist and failed MAGA gubernatorial candidate Senator Doug Mastriano. Dush, the new committee chair who led a sham election review last year, even stopped Democratic Senator Cappelletti from calling January 6 an insurrection.
“Pennsylvania Republicans’ election deniers and insurrectionists are kicking off the year doubling-down on passing anti-voter legislation to stay in power,” said DLCC executive director Heather Williams. “The Pennsylvania GOP has embraced MAGA extremism with open arms and allowed these radicals to take the reigns and set an agenda that undermines our most sacred institutions. Thankfully, Democrats flipped the Pennsylvania House and are holding the line against Republicans’ anti-voter agenda and attacks against our democracy.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee was the first and only entity committed to identifying, tracking, and condemning the hundreds of Republican state lawmakers who aided and abetted Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Its Threats to Democracy website is the most comprehensive account of state legislators and state legislative candidates who continue to normalize anti-democratic extremism and are complicit in the ongoing attack on our democracy. The DLCC is continuing to update the website as more information becomes available.
